The Inevitable Event (Al-Waqi‘ah)

Verses 83-96 GROUP_1437 56.83-96

83
فَلَوْلَا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَ
Why, then, when the soul of the dying man reaches the throat,
84
وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ
and you are [at that moment] looking on [helplessly]—
85
وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ
and We are nearer to him than you, although you cannot see Us—
86
فَلَوْلَا إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ
why, then, if you are not subject to Our command,
87
تَرْجِعُونَهَا إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
do you not cause the soul to return to him if you are truthful in your claim?
88
فَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ
But if he [the dying person] is one of those brought near to God,
89
فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّةُ نَعِيمٍ
then for him there shall be comfort and plenty and a Garden of Bliss;
90
وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
and if he is of those who are on the Right,
91
فَسَلَامٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ
he will be greeted with, ‘Peace be to you,’ by those on the Right.
92
وَأَمَّا إِن كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ
But if he is one of those who rejected [the truth] and went astray,
93
فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ
he will be welcomed with boiling water.
94
وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
He will burn in Hell.
95
إِنَّ هَذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْيَقِينِ
This is indeed the indubitable truth.
96
فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ
So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme.

Commentary

(a) The event of death is the last proof of the fact that man is completely helpless before the Divine powers. Every man will essentially die at a fixed time and nobody can save him from the angel of death. In view of this, man should be more concerned about his condition after death. Those who performed deeds deserving of paradise in their life before death, will be ushered into paradise in the life after death. However, those who shunned God in this world will be denied God’s grace in the Hereafter. They will be greeted with scalding water and the fire will be their abode.
